CHRIS DELANEY
A former firefighter, youth worker, and CFL hopeful, the autumn of 1993 brought devastating news for Chris. Chris was diagnosed with Leber's Optic Neuropathy, a degenerative eye disease at the age of 23.
Unsure what the future would bring, Chris developed the "Chris Delaney Vision Tour", which would have Chris and his team cycle across Canada, raising funds to fight blindness. Thanks to the opening support of McDonald's Restaurants of Canada and Cadillac Fairview, Chris completed the three-month expedition, travelling 100 miles each day, raising $300,000.00 for the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation, fighting blindness, and had the opportunity to inspire youth across Canada.
Continuing his passion for helping others, Chris has gone on to accomplish and contribute to many causes:
• Accomplished legally blind athlete - ultra-distance cyclist, bodybuilder, marathon runner
• Labelled one of the "100 Canadians to Watch" by MacLean's Magazine July 1, 1997
• Presented a letter of commendation from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien for volunteerism and community services
• Received the highest honour from Rotary Club International, The Paul Harris Fellowship Award for outstanding humanitarian contributions to improve the lives of others
