FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What makes YoPRO different from other frozen yogurt or ice cream?
Traditionally, ice cream and frozen yogurt have provided very little or no nutritional value. In fact, several ice cream manufacturers are now replacing dairy ingredients with oils, such as vegetable and palm oils. In addition, many frozen desserts include more and more artificial ingredients including artificial sweeteners, colours and preservatives.

At YoPRO Treats Inc., we are proud of our commitment to offer you a low fat, decadent snack that provides minerals, probiotics and rich amounts of protein; and absolutely no artificial ingredients. Winner of 5 awards, including the LIVERight™ Award for Best Kid-Friendly Item 2009*, YoPRO has an ice cream taste that has passed even the toughest critics... kids!

What are modified milk ingredients?
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency allows the following ingredients to be collectively labelled as modified milk ingredients: whey proteins, milk proteins, casein, cultured milk products, whey cream and whey butter. In YoPRO, the modified milk ingredients are our proprietary blend of the highest quality whey proteins. Now that our patent application has been filed, you will notice more ingredient detail on our new packaging for YoPRO probiotic, protein fortified frozen yogurt bars.

Why do I need protein and what does it do?
Properly balanced nutrition, including daily protein, plays an important role in the human body. Next to water, protein makes up the greatest portion of your body weight. Unlike fat and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein. Therefore, it must be consumed on a daily basis. Protein is essential to the make up of muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, glands, hair, nails and many vital body fluids. Protein is also essential for the growth of bones.

Protein is made up of chains of essential and non-essential amino acids, which are the "building blocks" for healthy bodies. The human body is not able to make essential amino acids, and the only way to get them is to eat high quality, protein-rich foods. Protein sources that contain all of the essential amino acids are called complete proteins. Whey protein, which is found in YoPRO, is a complete protein, offering all of the essential amino acids.

Protein has a number of different roles in the body including the following:
• Building immune system health
• Facilitating healing of wounds after surgery or injury
• Promoting healthy skin
• Repairing body cells
• Building and repairing muscles and tissues
• Providing a source of energy
• Controlling many of the important processes in the body related to metabolism

How much protein should I consume?
Recommended Nutrient Intakes of Canadians, determined by Health Canada, gives us the minimum requirement of nutrients needed each day. Recommended protein intake is determined on the basis of body weight and physical activity levels. In Canada, the figure is 0.86 grams of lean protein per kilogram of body weight for a sedentary person.

For example:
91kg (200lb) male needs (0.86g x 91kg) = 78g protein each day
66kg (145lb) female needs (0.86g x 66kg) = 57g protein each day
*To find your body weight in kg, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2

More Protein Needed for Active and Health-Challenged Individuals

Recent evidence shows that consuming protein immediately after exercise enhances muscle uptake and retention of amino acids, which promotes a more positive protein balance.

Both strength and endurance athletes may have greater protein needs. Inadequate protein intake can cause loss of muscle mass, slow recovery and compromised immune function - all of which can significantly affect exercise performance.

Some studies have found that strength athletes, such as weight lifters, may require as much as 1.4 - 2.0g of protein per kilogram of body weight to increase their muscle weight. Runners and other endurance athletes may also need more protein (1.2 - 1.4g/kg body weight) because on long workouts, they may burn protein for energy.

Individuals with bacterial or viral infections, and those who have experienced severe physical trauma, use up their protein stores rapidly and may need to increase their protein intake. In these cases, a doctor or physician should be consulted.

What are probiotics?
Probiotics are “friendly bacteria” that have been studied for their contribution to digestive health, regularity and may even contribute to immune health. L. Rhamnosus, one of the probiotics in YoPRO, has been studied for its ability to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestine. In addition, L. Acidophilus, which is also found in YoPRO, has been noted to decrease the frequency of yeast infections, and provide relief from indigestion and diarrhea.

Why do I need carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates supply the major fuel for all of your body's cells and the only source of energy for your brain and red blood cells. Along with physical activity, and consumed in moderation, carbohydrates are a natural source of energy (your brain functions exclusively on carbohydrates and oxygen).

Why do I need calcium?
Calcium is essential for a wide variety of functions, including muscle contraction, blood coagulation, nerve conduction, and cell membrane maintenance. In addition, calcium accounts for approximately 97% of the mineral component of human teeth and bones.

Health Canada recommends that women and men between the ages of 19 and 50 consume 1000mg each day and 1200mg for those over 50.

Why do I need potassium?
Potassium is the third most abundant mineral in the human body and is essential for good health. Sufficient amounts of potassium in the diet help keep your muscles (including your heart) strong; help control blood pressure; and control the water balance in your cells.

Adequate potassium also helps protect you against heart disease, hypoglycemia, diabetes, obesity and kidney disease. It also helps to keep bowels regular and works to reduce irritability, confusion and stress.

Why do I need iron?
Iron is an essential mineral involved in the transport of oxygen to every cell in the body. If the body is low in iron, fatigue, irritability and headaches may occur. If the deficiency becomes significant, this can lead to anemia, which can impair mental functioning.

The recommended daily allowance for iron is 8mg per day for men older than 19 years and women older than 50 years. Women between the ages of 19 and 50 should consume 18mg of iron each day.

Why are Trans fats bad?
Trans fats occur naturally in certain foods, and are also produced when manufacturers use a process called hydrogenation which turns liquid oil into a semi-solid. Trans fats are often added into baked goods and fried foods to give them a longer shelf life, but research has shown that Trans fats can also increase your risk of heart disease and heart attack. Consuming Trans fats has a negative impact on your health since they can create blockages which decreases blood flow to important organs and increases your risk of a heart attack.

How is YoPRO sweetened?
Special care and consideration was given to achieve our goal of a balance of 2 grams of carbohydrates for every gram of protein. The sweetener used in YoPRO, liquid invert sugar, is a high quality natural sweetener. Along with physical activity, and consumed in moderation, sugar is a natural source of energy (your brain functions exclusively on sugar and oxygen). In addition, by consuming lean proteins with sugar, the release of glucose (sugar) in your blood stream will be slowed, keeping your blood sugar stable and controlling the release of insulin. There is less sugar (and more protein) in a serving of YoPRO than a glass of low fat chocolate milk or fruit juice.

Will you be producing sugar-free YoPRO?
Every ingredient that goes into YoPRO is thoroughly researched and is of the highest quality. As there is a lack of long term studies completed on artificial sweeteners, at this time we are proud to offer a natural product. Once more research has been done into the effects of long term use of artificial or alternative sweeteners; we may revisit them in the future.

Do you plan to develop new flavours and products?
We are so thrilled to see the response that YoPRO has been receiving and it is definitely in our plans to introduce new flavours and new products. If you would like to request a flavour or product type, please send us an email.
